Implementing Speed Limits

Implementing Speed Limits Speed limits are set putting into consideration the type of road and the time of the day. A speed limit of 70mph has been proposed in the United States especially in rural areas and those that have low populations.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Implementing Speed Limits specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The main aim of increasing the speed limit is to improve transportation services and increase the rate at which goods and services are delivered. It should be viewed as a measure to get traffic to move fast as a result of a uniform flow of traffic (1). This would make the roads safer since there would be no competition between the fast and slow moving vehicles. When cautiously implemented, increased speed limits would result to low rates of accidents because drivers tend to be more attentive when driving at high speeds and as result, there would be low insurance claims. The small changes occurring in form of toxic em issions from automobiles do not affect the environment. The most common pollutant, nitrogen dioxide may exceed the target emissions only in city centers but not on highways. Another major pollutant is airborne particulates that results from large diesel engines especially of buses and transit vehicles. The amount of this pollutant is not affected by any change in speed hence an increase in speed limit to 70mph will not cause any negative effects to the environment (1). Many other pollutants including carbon dioxide are emitted in large amounts at low speeds hence raisin the speed limit would be an added advantage to the environment since low levels of pollutants would be released at high speeds. Increased speeds would have negligible effect on the occurrence of traffic noise. This noise is created by the friction between the road surface and the tires of the vehicle (1). A high contribution to noise levels result from the weight of the vehicles and the quality of the road surface. M ore so, most highways are remote and McDonnell, Roberts. Governor McDonnell Announces 70 mph Speed Limits on 680 Miles of Interstate. Office of Governor: Virginia, 2010. far from residential areas and this makes traffic noise irrelevant since it does not affect anyone in that case. A raise in speed limit would as well affect the economy with the most evident benefit being the value of time that is saved despite the prices of fuel. The value of the time saved might be more valuable than the extra costs of fuel calculated. An increase in speed limit would result to elevated fuel consumption and consequently an increase in fuel tax rates (1). The treasury would benefit by earning extra income from the increased tax rates.Advertising Looking for essay on law? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Increasing the speed limit would promote safety of the motorists by allowing a consistent speed between them. Speed limits would b e posted on all highways to guide drivers and this would reduce accident rates by motorists. The number of drivers who break the law would be reduced since most drivers prefer high speeds which would now be acceptable by the law. It is also better to set realistic speed limits that will be followed by motorists than to let them ignore the badly set ones which would result to numerous accidents (1). In case of low speed limits, faster drivers tend to find other routes that have less law enforcement although they are more dangerous. An increase of a reasonable speed limit would make them get back to the roads which are constructed to suit the high speeds and are even safer to use. McDonnell, Roberts. The Consequences of Removing Dams and Changing River Flow in the Essay

The Consequences of Removing Dams and Changing River Flow in the Columbia River in Washington & Oregon - Essay Example This crisis poses wholesale environmental, economic and social consequences; hence, this survey examines some of the major consequences of removing the dams and changing the Columbia River flow and describing the impact upon salmon numbers. The debate over the controversial topic of dam removal in order to safeguard the salmon against extinction rages among environmentalists, scientists, politicians, fishing families, river-based entrepreneurs, etcetera. The Army Corps of Engineer's report, according to Richard Davis, identifies "three critical industries [that] would suffer closing or relocations if the dams were to be removed. Primarily aluminum manufacturing would be hit by higher electricity rates. Wood products producers would incur higher costs to ship logs, wood chips, pulp paper and lumber. [Likewise], food processors would be damaged by the loss of crops grown on lands irrigated from the lower Snake River" (awb.org/). "The U.S. "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has estimated that breaching the dams would increase electricity bills for Northwest ratepayers by $300 million, add $40 million to transportation costs, eliminate 37,000 acres of prime irrigated farmland, wipe out 2,300 jobs, and cut personal income by $278 million a year." (qtd in Brunell awb.org/cgi-bin/absolutenm/templates/a=1201&z=10) However, Dan Hansen noted that the U.S. Army Corps' extensive report provides no recommendations to resolve the environmental crisis the Pacific northwest faces (bluefish.org/offersno.htm). In contrast, however, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services was quite resolute in its response to the situation; it has claimed that deciding on a course of action should be very easy indeed because "for native fish and wildlife, a free-flowing river is better than a dammed river" (bluefish.org/offersno.htm). Apparently, according to Hansen also, some scientists believe that the best method of protecting the endangered fish populations lies in breaching the dams. The impact of dismantling the dams, however, would entail life-altering repercussions on the surroundings and human populations. For example, the annual economic costs would be pegged at $246 million owing to losses in electricity production (bluefish.org/offersno.htm). Sealing off the interlocking dam mechanisms with their attendant closure of the federal waterways would most likely result in the demise of Lewiston, Idaho, for example, as a "seaport." Should a dam breach be effected Lewiston, Idaho, would no longer be the harbor providing navigational facilities for ocean-going ships. Furthermore, because the locking mechanisms of Snake River dams facilitate barge freight from Lewiston, Idaho to the Pacific Ocean, commodities presently being shipped by barges would have to be re-routed to trucks or railways. Another ramification would engender the federal government having to invest billions into new highways, state roads and railway lines if the dams are disrupted (Brunell). Along this argument, Richard Davis also announced that the economic consequences of removing the dams "would fall heavily on rural Eastern Washington and the Columbia

LOVE MANAGEMENT PLANNING Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

LOVE MANAGEMENT PLANNING - Essay Example It analyses situations within and those surrounding the organization that can help achieve or hinder the achievement of its targeted goals and objective. Here is an illustration of the planning functions of BP’s management. In line with the organizational mission and objective, the management has realized the need for the company to provide environmentally friendly sources of energy (Fredrick, 2006). Thus, the company has a targeted goal of increasing Liquid Petroleum Gas, which is least pollutant to the environment. Since this alone may not help achieve the profit prospective of the company, jet fuel processing needs to be increased, as it is less environmental pollutant, as compared to diesel, kerosene, and petrol. The management has evaluated and found this move to be worthwhile, since most Energy providing company are involved in the other most pollutant fuels. Therefore, the management decision for this New Year is to increase the facilities for LPG and Jet fuel processing, while minimizing those foe diesel, kerosene, and petrol. However, this comes with increased costs, since the refinement of crude oil into LPG and Jet fuels requires more time and specialized facilities. The increased cost of production will be met by the company’s increased market for LPG and Jet fuels, through signing new contracts to supply Airlines and LPG supplier companies. The new project is implementable as a pilot project in ten countries within the next two years. This will help the management assess whether the move is worth for the company to make. It is during this period that the new strategy of the company will be monitored and evaluated, after which the project will be implemented full, once it proves successful. Many factors have influenced the performance of the management. The legal issues such as increased taxation on the products that the company produces have had the effect of reducing the profits of the company (Fredrick, 2006).

Filming People Without Permission

Filming People Without Permission People use their cellphones to record a moment when they find it amusing, it can be somebodys birthday, can be an event that they like, or for fun. But when used in the wrong way, it can lead to bad luck for the subjects who were filmed without their consent and can lead to major consequences. Its important to know whether we should and we shouldnt, why do we do this? For a prank? To go revenge on someone or sell someone out? These kind of situations can mean a lot of other things. Nearly 85% of all teenagers who own a installed camera electronic (Smartphones, Digital Cameras, etc.) record an individual who has been recorded without his or her authorization. This can cause a big privacy problem to those who dont want themselves to be filmed by another person and submit them to the public/ social media networks. As these acts can lead to the victim getting bullied, harassed, or ruin their reputation. There are such laws regarding these acts in some parts of the U.S.,   a person who commits a crime like this will demand the violator to pay a huge amount of money, up to $100,000.00 fine. Many questions have been asked. Why bother filming others without their consent? There are many reasons why teenagers do this, one reason is to record a fight between two guys just because for entertainment. This act is very dangerous, yes there were two people fighting, but no permission was given. Fighting in public is prohibited as many people will record this horrid action and will motivate others to do the same thing. As many videos online are being uploaded to the internet for about 6000 videos per second, all it takes is one video. That video will be shared, re-uploaded non-stop until it meets the maximum amount of people online. Once anything is online, it cant be erased if deleted. Be very cautious when filming the right subject to avoid the consequences it holds. Another unanswered question is why film? Many people dont realize this isnt a game when they are filming another individual fighting another individual. Entertain themselves is the reason, many teenagers share this info to one another in order to spread rumors and other remarks, ordering everyone to attack the one who lost the fight. Which spreads also controversy to the media determining on protecting someones privacy to avoid being filmed and bullied from others. People have already violated the people who dont want to expose themselves to the public in social media, not that its okay to be popular, but this can make thousands of people despise the victim depending on the situation. If not careful, this can lead the victim to bad luck. Its important that parents need to know what their teenagers film when not present. Even though they are already grown up, they still need to learn the right and maturity way to handle these acts. Even if their parents dont expect these acts, they must teach their teen how to respect peoples privacy. Other reasons are not common, but can happen at anytime. Another reason is to spy or eavesdrop another person. Its another way to give out the truth to another individual and show what the person you spied on is doing and what is their next motive to move on to. This reason is practically not important but its another way to give out the truth, just like how a News Network handles the news; they cover for it, send out the facts on the story they want to cover, and talk on a serious note. The next reason is for fun. People love to have fun especially when they have the freedom to do so. But for this kind of filming, some people love to secretly capture / take a picture of someones face and try to edit them in a silly way. This is another common reason why people film others, even though the topic is Filming another person, Filming also counts as taking a photo of someone without their permission. When people take a photo of themselves, they call it a slang term for it, a selfie. and a fter that, they edit their photos in a more hilarious and weird way to produce laughter within themselves. Then, at other times they would jokingly take a picture of a friend of theirs and edit their face in a hilarious way, even though he didnt want his face to become in the social network media. Many things can go wrong if taking photos are not taken seriously, some people dont care if they are filmed without their permission and seem okay about it. But note that this can also affect on your reputation and your current job too! Your manager does not want to see your face edited in a inappropriate manner/way so make sure nobody is using your privacy rights in a bad situation. Now how can this hurt you and others if you dont take this seriously and still disrespect someones privacy. EVERYONE needs privacy to continue progressing to their established goal for the day. When its been treating itself badly, it cannot help you in any sort of way, and your goal will mean nothing to you, so be careful when dealing with people who can easily publish your face in the media. In one by one, this will show you why to be extra cautious about being filmed. (Get Hired by Manager for a job) Your boss at work wants to learn about you, they are not people to confide if you are not cooperating as this is a requirement. They want people who are confident and always cooperating, even if you didnt post the edited pictures. (To prevent bullying to the victim) You could be in trouble depending on how the picture they have taken of you represented. Be sure to check with an adult if this situation happens, this is common, but can be controlled. If you think privacy is not a big deal, think about the consequences, anything can happen. (To avoid conflict) Even if you didnt film someone or if YOURE the victim, you can avoid any problems you didnt commit. And finally (To stay safe online and everywhere) everybody in the world is not nice, so make some good and kind friends who trust you to become yourself and most importantly, to straighten your charisma and your social life. This isnt a PSA about not using electronics, but teenagers should be very careful not to mislead technology as a way to ruin other peoples lives. Theres not much to go on other more facts about recording other people but its a major problem adults have to face through. 15% of people who were filmed by another person committed suicide due to excessive amount of bullying and harassment the people gone through by their bad luck. One person was filmed when he was sleeping in class and he was drooling while not noticing hoods drool. One student filmed him sleeping on his desk for five minutes until he woke up, checked his phone for new messages and one message had the video one of his friends had sent him, of course it was him, drooling and sleeping and during the video, one person approached him and drew inappropriate drawings on his face and laughter filled the room. The video ends, then later in the day he met a group of 12 people gathering around him and calling him a name I cannot ty pe here, he was beaten up and sprang home which was his last place to visit. A true story, later on the student who filmed the suicidal kid never cared about the kid, and the school he went to, suspended everyones phone. Which no one followed this rule. I believe no one should film other people for entertainment because it puts yourself and the victim at risk and can suffer the consequences, adults should be aware of what their own kids are up to and what are they dealing with as ignoring this can lead to another victim, then another, then another, and so on

Dna Identification System :: essays research papers

The Australian society would not benefit by the introduction of a DNA signature identification system for all citizens over the age of 18. This is the same thing as the Australian Card, which was stopped being released in the mid 1960’s. There were a number of reasons for this, as some being the government would know everything about you but maybe the government know more about you then you think. But is it all really that bad? Maybe it would help us as we could use it for identification purposes instead of carrying around a driver’s license or maybe a birth certificate it would all be held on this one card. Would the identification system be a benefit or not. It will defiantly change the way we do things. The DNA Identification System does have its benefits, as it would help in the medical department. If you were rushed to hospital from a car accident and you are unconscious the doctor will know if you were allergic to the anaesthetic or if you were a private patient or not. This would also help in the crime department, as it would store the whole of the Australian population of individuals over the age of 18. This would have all the information about each individual these would include their DNA, and other vital statistics. At the scene of the crime there is usually fingerprints or some kind of DNA trail left behind. The police would use this DNA to log into the database to track down the criminal. It would also tell the location of where that criminal is to make it easier to find them. The system also has its problems, Lets say that you were a carrier of a disease but it does not affect you at any way at all, this could effect your employability as your employer could have access to your information. This would destroy our right to privacy. “The right to privacy is one of the fundamental rights of any civilised society'; As quoted in the video ‘You have no secrets’ All of your information would be stored on a database, which would be accessible from the Internet.

Three General Orders Essay

When you are on guard you are responsible for everything that occurs within the limits of your post while you are on duty. You are also responsible for all equipment and property located within the limits of your post. The exact limits of your post are defined by the special orders. The special orders should also include every place a guard must go to perform your duties. You will investigate every unusual or suspicious occurrence on or near your post provided that you do not have to leave your point of duty to do so. If necessary, you or the NCO who is on guard with you will contact the chain of command for instructions. While on guard you will remain at your place of duty and continue to perform all duties required until you are relieved by proper authority. If a guard requires relief because of sickness or for any other reason, you to notify your chain of command and wait until you are replaced by another guard or you have permission from the proper authorities to leave your point of duty. If you are not relieved when your time of duty is up, you do not abandon your post. You or the NCO on duty will contact your chain of command for instructions and stay at your point of duty until you are properly relieved. While on guard you will read over your special orders prior to you starting your duty. You will obey, execute, and enforce all special orders pertaining to your post. The commander of the guard is responsible for insuring that all guards understand their special instructions prior to being posted. In addition to your special orders, a guard is responsible to obey and carry out any orders or instructions from the commanding officer, field officer of the day, and officers and noncommissioned officers of the guard. No other persons are authorized to give a guard orders or instructions. Any special instructions for a guard should be issued through the guard's chain of command. When on guard you will pass instructions to your relief when appropriate. The informa tion is also given to the commander of the relief. You will perform your duties in a military manner and serve as an example to others. A guard reports all violations of special orders to the commander of the relief. You may have to apprehend the offender, if necessary. A guard reports all emergencies that occur on or near post. The guard will take whatever action is prescribed in your special orders or guard instructions. Anytime the guard is in doubt as to what action to take, or it is not covered in the special orders, you will call the commander of the relief for instructions or assistance. Sleeping on guard duty is not tolerated by any means. If you fall asleep on guard duty a lot of things can happen. Your post can be over run, the equipment that you are meant to guard could be stolen, or the building you’re guarding could get broken into. You could face a UMCJ action for falling asleep because you’re in violation of FM 22-6 which covers guard duty. You are looked upon to perform your duty at all times and if you fall asleep you fail to do your part and cover all things that are covered in you special orders. Any violations that may occur at your post you can become a part of because you fell asleep while the violations happen. Falling asleep on guard duty prevents you from reacting in a timing manner to an emergency. Over all falling asleep hinders you from doing your job on guard.

The History and Archaeology of Chauvet Cave

The History and Archaeology of Chauvet Cave Chauvet Cave (also known as  Chauvet-Pont dArc) is currently the oldest known rock art site in the world, apparently dating to the Aurignacian period in France, about 30,000-32,000 years ago. The cave is located in the Pont-dArc Valley of Ardà ¨che, France, at the entrance of the Ardà ¨che gorges between the Cevennes and Rhone valleys. It extends horizontally for nearly 500 meters (~1,650 feet) into the earth and consists of two main rooms separated by a narrow hallway. Paintings at Chauvet Cave Over 420 paintings have been documented in the cave, including numerous realistic animals (reindeer, horses, aurochs, rhinoceros, bison, lions, cave bears among others), human handprints, and abstract dot paintings. The paintings in the front hall are primarily red, created with the liberal applications of red ochre, while the ones in the back hall are mainly black designs, drawn with charcoal. The paintings at Chauvet are highly realistic, which is unusual for this period in Paleolithic rock art. In one famous panel (a little bit is shown above) an entire pride of lions is illustrated, and the feeling of movement and power of the animals is tangible even in photographs of the cave taken in poor light and at low resolution. Archaeological Investigation The preservation in the cave is remarkable. Archaeological material in Chauvet caves deposits include thousands of animal bones, including the bones of at least 190 cave bears (Ursus spelaeus). The remains of hearths, an ivory spearhead, and a human footprint have all been identified within the caves deposits. Chauvet Cave was discovered in 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet; the relatively recent discovery of this remarkably intact cave painting site has allowed researchers to closely control the excavations using modern methods. In addition, the researchers have worked to protect the site and its contents. Since 1996, the site has been under investigation by an international team led by Jean Clottes, combining geology, hydrology, paleontology, and conservation studies; and, since that time, it has been closed to the public, to preserve its fragile beauty. Dating Chauvet The dating of Chauvet cave is based on 46 AMS radiocarbon dates taken on tiny pieces of paint from the walls, conventional radiocarbon dates on human and animal bone, and Uranium/Thorium dates on speleotherms (stalagmites). The deep age of the paintings and their realism has led in some circles to a scholarly revision of the notion of paleolithic cave art styles: since radiocarbon dates are a more recent technology than the bulk of cave art studies, codified cave art styles are based on stylistic changes. Using this measure, Chauvets art is closer to Solutrean or Magdalenian in age, at least 10,000 years later than the dates suggest. Paul Pettitt has questioned the dates, arguing that the radiocarbon dates within the cave are earlier than the paintings themselves, which he believes are Gravettian in style and date to no earlier than about 27,000 years ago. Additional radiocarbon dating of the cave bear population continues to support the original date of the cave: the bone dates all fall between 37,000 and 29,000 years old. Further, samples from a nearby cave support the idea that cave bears may have been extinct in the region by 29,000 years ago. That would mean that the paintings, which include cave bears, must be at least 29,000 years old. One possible explanation for the stylistic sophistication of Chauvets paintings is that perhaps there was another entrance to the cave, that allowed later artists access to the cave walls. A study of the geomorphology of the cave vicinity published in 2012 (Sadier and colleagues 2012), argues that the cliff overhanging the cave collapsed repeatedly beginning 29,000 years ago, and sealed the only entrance at least 21,000 years ago. No other cave access point has ever been identified, and given the morphology of the cave, none is likely to be found. These findings do not resolve the Aurignacian/Gravettian debate, although even at 21,000 years of age, Chauvet cave remains the oldest known cave painting site. Werner Herzog and Chauvet Cave In late 2010, film director Werner Herzog presented a documentary film of Chauvet Cave, shot in three-dimensions, at the Toronto film festival. The film, Cave of the Forgotten Dreams, premiered in limited movie houses in the United States on April 29, 2011.
